Old Cathedral of Kaliningrad, Russia
Originally names Konisberg the city was destroyed on a large scale during World War II, the ruins were then occupoed by the Red Army and by 1945 the German population was forced out and it was renamed Kaliningrad in honour of Mikhail Kalinin. The ruins compared to the very new city built around it from the late 40’s on has created a fascinating city with some great architecture. The pre war parts of the city mostly consist of parks, broad avenues and two buildings, the House of Soviets and the restored Konisberg Cathedral.
If you are planning on staying in Kaliningrad the Radisson Blu Hotel sits in the heart of the old town main square and will be a great base to explore the city from. Some other buildings to put on your list to see include the King’s Gate, Main City’s Theatre, the former Konisberg Stock Exchange building and the former city hall building, which is now the Museum of History and Arts.
